Ah, interesting observation you have there. It never really occurred to me that Gai and Kiko both have this sexual frustration/desire/longing thing with unattainable people, but there you go.

Perhaps their overdramatised reactions had something to do with it.

@Owen S: it may very well be more appropriately a fantasy. I just like that, given something extraordinary has happened, scientists are studying it. We don't really understand why gravity works, but we have a name and a theory for it. Eventually there would be the same for the phenomena associated with Hell's Gate.

Ah, thanks for the fresh perspective on the show. It's been a bit hard for me to view the Contractor/Doll system as outright science, but maybe that's just because I like the idea of magic in an overtly urban setting. I mean, the Contractors do work on a principle of equivalent exchange!

Good point about Pandora, but don't get your hopes up too high about what the acronym really means, since it's all in Engrish. It's probably a bit too early for you to notice right now, but your point does remind me that the way in which Dolls are used at some points are very precise and scientific--to the point of resembling the precogs in Minority Report.

My grasp of this facet of Sartre comes from No Exit, wherein he borrows a trick from Dante and depicts people in Hell. Most of them are there, the reader initially thinks, for having sinned according to the Judeo-Christian understanding of morality, but it rapidly becomes clear that the true sin they have each committed is not acting honestly according to their natures.

In effect, it's a condemnation of halfway measures. Each of the characters is caught between what they really want, and the power or convenience involved in doing other things - frequently what society wants or expects. In the end what they did satisfied neither themselves nor society. Intellectually, this is not terribly difficult to grasp, but even so, fully accepting responsibility for choice and taking actions that do not suffer from the impulse to temporize is difficult.

[...] So maybe I exaggerated; I do have a few comments to make about the end of Toradora! I mean, it felt strange not doing so anyway; it seems obligatory (as Cuchlann observes as well). [...]

I personally didn't like the way the show went but that's just me.

I think people forget that characters are in a way human too and humans like many other things change over time. We aren't in the characters' heads all the time. If characters change the way they think then their actions can change too and maybe even faster especially when we're pressured or if something new comes into our lives. So we think characters should do something because that makes the most sense to us and because we think change has to be gradual and characters have to remain "in character".

Toradora did something unexpected: it became wholesome family entertainment.

The bits with the Takasus, and especially Ya-chan is gold. Heartwarming and redemptive - that lays out so much possibility for the young couple's future.

I can recommend this over most if not all the narmy fare over at the Hallmark or Lifetime cable channels. I never felt for a moment that I was being lectured or preached to.
